Yoga is something I've been dying to try. In an actual studio that is. I've long since only done yoga in the privacy of my own living room, following along with various YouTube videos. While being in your own space is comfortable and less intimidating for beginners, having an instructor guide you through the process is the best way to practice yoga! Earlier this week I finally made it to my first class. Let me tell you there is nothing to feel nervous, or intimidated by. Before your first class, just do some research. Read about the different types of classes. Yes there are ALL different types of yoga. I went to a 'gentle yoga' class to get my feet wet.
And here's what I learned...
1. Dress comfortably. Wear breathable clothes that won't restrict your movement. For me this was leggings (not cotton, those do not breathe well), a fitted top (a loose shirt is sure to leave you exposed during your first downward dog), and a sports bra.
2. Bring the proper equipment. Most yoga studios rent mats for a couple bucks, but you can buy nice mats for as little as $15 (I scored this one for $13 at T.J.Maxx). I did not invest in any other props before my first class (i.e. a block, blanket, or strap. I borrowed these items from the studio.) I also recommend a water bottle!
3. Don't take class on a full stomach. You want to be able to stretch and move around easily. A full tummy isn't ideal for this. It's recommended that you eat one hour before class. Or if you're like me always running from one place to the next, stick to a light snack (fruit or yogurt.)
4. Arrive early. Show up about 10 minutes early for your first class. This gives you time to fill out any necessary paper work, connect with the teacher, and get a prime spot in the studio. Be sure to tell the teacher you're a beginner!
5. Be a beginner. My teacher explained at the start of class that Child's Pose is always okay. Remember that whenever you need a rest, or you're not comfortable with a pose, it's totally okay to go back to this pose. Just continue to move at a pace that is good for you.
6. Familiarize yourself with yoga etiquette. Again do your research before class. Knowing some basic dos and don'ts will make you feel way more comfortable in an unfamiliar situation.
Oh and don't forget to breathe! Just relax, and let everything else go while you're at yoga!
